Selling out

Can somebody please tell me the real definition of selling out? Is it like, when a band or someone gets to big to meet their fans, or would it be like missing concerts to promote themselves on mtv? I mean, what is it?

Since I don't know the answer to that, I'm not going to go on and complain about some of my favorite bands quote on quote "selling out". I will admit, some of them are kind of forgetting where they came from. I was just talking to a couple of my friends about this, but, it's easier to meet bands like Bayside and Rancid, who've been in the music industry a considerably long amount of time, than it is to meet bands like All Time Low, Forever the Sickest Kids, and Mayday Parade, who've been around a couple of years, at the most. I mean, isn't that sad?

These bands who won't come out of their tour busses until most of their fanbase has left confuse the hell out of me. I mean, these people buy your shit to help you make it as a band, as a musician, as a human! They put money in your pockets so that you can survive on your own. Without as many fans, they'd still be working steady jobs, they'd stick close to home, they'd still be living with their parents, I bet! So why ignore the people who give you the oppurtunity to do that? Because they're annoying? Because they think you're cute? I mean...what?

And then some bands will cancel shows for promotion offers. I mean, like in one case that just kind of pops up is when All Time Low cancelled a warped tour date to be on FNMTV. They claimed if they didn't show up, there would be no way to promote their video, or whatever. But how many people have you seen do live webcams? Or made a video because they couldn't make it? I'm sure MTV wouldn't have murdered them because they wanted to play that show for their fans in that state.

It's not just ATL who's doing this. Obviously a lot of other bands have fallen in the trap that is MTV, but ATL was just the one I thought of.

To sum this up, I just think it's rediculous you have to wait over an hour for some band member to come out. Someone who you support and give money to, doesn't even want to come out and say thank you or something? That's horrible.

Ego's can get big and easily stay big, but fanbases can get big and easily shrink.
